Chris Dormer

Printmaker, Fibre and public art artist

Chris grew up on the western plains of New South Wales, studied at Macquarie University, Sydney, completed visual arts at Riverina Institute of Higher Education, Albury and studied printmaking at Goulburn Ovens TAFE in Wangaratta. The unique light and landscape of North East Victoria feature strongly in her image making. Her artwork often draws on narratives, journeys, events and experiences that can be historic or contemporary.

The strong links in her image making relate to her capacity to experiment with collage, digital images, different medium, materials and techniques including printmaking, textiles and basketry.
Making visual images and 3D objects is about the artist valuing and treasuring the essence of what is around them and the influences of elements from the physical environment and the everyday.

Chris often uses natural and recycled materials and combines these to explore new ideas. Hence her works ‘are a distillation of a myriad of thoughts and ideas that evolve and emerge one after another’. Chris invites you to share, explore and ‘treasure’ the realisations of the artist. She continues to work in her new Beechworth studio, Botanicus Finch, regularly exhibits her artwork in regional and local galleries and is represented in public and private collections in Australia and overseas.

Chris is a former Beechworth Arts Council President and is currently our Vice President
