Visual Artist
“I’m a self-taught artist. I’ve always drawn and painted when I could, but I never had the time or space to develop an art practice until I retired and moved to Beechworth several years ago.
Before that I taught English Literature, History and Psychology for 30 plus years, mostly with final year students. I moved around quite a lot- (Melbourne, Geelong, Canberra, London, York, back to Canberra, and finally, Beechworth.) I went to art exhibitions as much as possible and managed the odd life drawing session.
After the move here I began painting in oils and developed an interest in pastel along the way. More recently I’ve started working in gouache and acrylics. My art is mostly figurative, and I am fascinated by portraiture and the transition between the real and imagined image.
My style is always developing and changing, and I’m happy to play with ideas and experiment with new approaches. While I’ve done a couple of short workshops, I’ve found that practice, curiosity and experimentation are the best tools for learning. To me art, like life, is a journey.”
